Police re-open old case against Saravana Bhavan owner


Saravana Bhavan CHENNAI: In a new development to the human trafficking case filed against P R Sivakumar, managing director (overseas), Saravana Bhavan hotel, the airport police on Tuesday arrested him for sending one of his employees, Ragu Chandran, to the US in 2005 with the help of fake travel documents.

Sivakumar was produced before the magistrate’s court in Alandur but, based on the bail he had got from a higher court, the magistrate, Ramanathan, released him. The police have booked Sivakumar as the second accused in the case.

In hi-tech city Chennai, schools say no to online birth certificates


Chennai Corporation CHENNAI: The city corporation’s ambitious project to make available all civic services online has gone down well with citizens across all age groups. But not with some prominent city schools, which reject application forms attached with online birth certificates.

School authorities insist that parents should produce the ‘original’ certificates as proof of age while taking application forms and attach attested photocopies of the original while they are being submitted.

Chennai Airport to get a new navigation system


Chennai Airport CHENNAI: Flying into Chennai will no longer be expensive for airlines and time-consuming for passengers, as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is all set to make the airport one among the most fuel-efficient destinations in the country.

At a time when airlines and airports have started to feel the impact of economic slowdown, AAI has decided to tweak air traffic control procedures to cut down air traffic congestion and avoid delays in landing of aircraft at Chennai airport.

Ketamine drug exported to Chennai as onions


Drugs seized in Chennai Chennai: They look like onions; however, that is how a 197 kg of Ketamine Hydrochloride arrived in Chennai from North India.

The rupees 20 crore worth drug was packed in the onion shaped packets and mixed with the original onions meant for export.

According to officials, Ketamine seizures have been on the rise in Chennai with more than 10 seizures at the Chennai airport and the harbour.

My remarks on AIADMK were to make fun - Karunanidhi


Karunanidhi Chennai (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Tuesday said his remarks that AIADMK might have incited the violence in Dr B R Ambedkar Law College here was only to make “fun” of its chief Jayalalithaa’s demand for his resignation owning moral responsibility of the incident.

In a statement, he asked if Jayalalithaa had to file a defamation case against him for his remarks, “how many cases had to be filed against her for making disparaging remarks.”

Parsvnath Developers and Spanish Company Joint Venture qualifies to bid for Rs 1,220cr project


Parsvnath Developers Parsvnath Developers today announced a joint venture consortium with the Spanish infrastructure company Constructora San Jose.

The consortium has submitted a Request for Qualification to National Highways Authority of India and has qualified to submit a financial bid for construction of an elevated expressway in the National Highway 4, a press release said.

Chennai Techie Ganesh Sivaraman found dead in Australia - parents suspect foul play


CHENNAI: Since November 14, Ganesh Sivaraman’s online networking community account has been filling up with condolence messages from friends.

The research engineer at the University of South Australia died under mysterious circumstances a week ago. But the reason the messages have been filing in only from Friday, November 14, is because that’s the day Ganesh’s parents, who live in Vadapalani, Chennai, found out about their son’s death.
