Foodgrain Prices in Chennai - 22 May 2008


Food Grains Chennai (PTI): Price of urad dal moved up while all other commodities ruled steady in the wholesale foodgrains market here on Thursday.

Urad dal moved up by Rs.50 per quintal to Rs.3,750 against the previous rate of Rs.3,700.

Thoor dal, moong dal, gram dal, sugar, wheat, maida and sooji remained unchanged.

Chennai restaurants review prices as inflation hits their kitchens


Chennai Tiffins CHENNAI: Chennai is a gourmet’s delight. Everyone from the construction worker to the chief executive eats out with the difference being in the ambience, choice in ‘a la carte’ and of course the price. However, the spiraling cost, which began in April, has impacted on both the gourmand and the man who eats on the roadside ‘thattu kadai’ just to survive.

Raghavendar, an epicurean, did the unthinkable when he took his family to a fine dining restaurant. He read out the price, instead of discussing the menu."My family was horrified at my behavior, but with the steep increase in prices, I cannot help keep a tab on how much we spend," he adds.

Ticket-less travelers in trains pay Rs 60 lakh as fine in April


Chennai_Central_Station_800px CHENNAI: Noticing a high incidence of people traveling without valid tickets in trains during summer vacations, Southern Railway’s Chennai division has started cracking the whip. In April alone, ticket inspection has yielded a fine amount of more than Rs 60 lakh. Ticket-less travel is seen more during summer vacations and festival seasons.

Last financial year, Chennai division collected Rs 6.12 crore by cracking down on ticket-less travelers.
